Cover Memo
Throughout my Writing, Research, and Technology course I was required to be a digital writer. Prior to this class I did not have much experience with digital writing, the concept was fairly new to me. I quickly adapted though and began learning the ropes of being a digital writer. In this cover memo I will use digital writing to narrate my own journey in digital writing with you.
The sixth core value of the Rowan University Writing Arts major is: "Writing Arts students will understand the impact evolving technologies have on the creation of written texts." Throughout this course I was discovering the truth of this core value. As I worked through each assignment I was learning that technology has an incredible impact on the creation of text.
In the first assignment, which was Tweeting Maxims, I saw the profound effect of Twitter on people's lives - social media can be a very time-consuming writing tool/technology.
The second project, the Twitterive, incorporated different means of digital writing to create a story. The beginning of this assignment was to tweet all of my actions during one weekend. Then, I had to link my twitter feed to my website. After that I began composing a story through my tweets which stated what I had done during that one weekend. I chose two repetends for my Twitterive, these were ethics and spiders. I took these two repetends and fused them into one. In the end, after all of my drafts were completed I had a story that combined ethics and spiders. With this assignment, I believe that I acted out the fourth core value for Writing Arts students. Through images found on Google, a Prezi presentation, a Wordle, and many spider web templates, I produced my Twitterive. This incorporation of many different technologies into digital text was an example of the fourth core value.
The next assignment for class, which was Research & Argumentation, had two of the simpler tasks of the semester and one very involved task. In this section of the course I had to conduct a YouTube Conversation with my classmates. Through this assignment I was able to see the second core value of Writing Arts majors, which is "Writing Arts students will understand theories of writing and reading and be able to apply them to their own writing." This was done through the conversation that was held between my two group members and I. The different argumentative strategies examined and used were an example of a theory of writing.
Inside of the Research & Argumentation topic was also an Annotated Bibliography. Through the composition of this resource list and explanation I think that I incorporated core value eight. This core value expresses that Writing Arts students need to be aware of grammar and mechanics rules and adhere to these in order to generate proper written text. This was done by the paragraphs that I formed with complete sentences, correct punctuation, and following proper citation rules. Throughout the last project, the Video Mash-up, I believe I incorporated the fifth core value, because I constantly ran into roadblocks. These breakdowns allowed me to stop and evaluate my work which caused me to then see where I needed to improve and better the quality of my digital writing which in turn progressed the excellence of my mash-up. Each of these breakdowns helped me to see my writing in a new light and therefore correct my mistakes so that I would not repeat them in the future.
